Rojak ; Malaysian Favourite and MY Personal Joke
Hello peeps , haven't been bloggin for ages ... it feels like .. since SPM started , since Becky's pc broke down . Haven't had the mood to blog , as if I don't see the thrill of having a online diary already . Hahahaha coz maybe my place has been too quiet . Too little people visiting and taggin .. Anyway , things has been FINE lately . SPM has been "chillin" according to my sis , she loves to use this word . Thanks to helpful faithful prayers from everyone in church , family , friends , and whoever i didn't mention - that doesn't mean i count you out! I've been taking each paper at a time though , and i guess that's what helps me through . GOD"S FAITHFULNESS! AMEN! Anyway i can't wait for what's coming ... bought a rm 149 Panasonic Audio Recorder the other week , so cool .... get to buy what i wanted and play with my toy! Yay , i recorded some of my favourite and organ exam songs to listen . But somehow it's stressful and kinda fun . Adjusting the right and best position to get the clearest sound , and gotta play perfectly from top to bottom! Hahahhaha like REAL recording .. ahhaa ... now i get to see where's my mistakes and what is nice and Not nice ... yay! Ok next , i'm looking forward to this saturday night's Yamaha Electone Stagea Concert at PJ! Yay !! It's a Yoshihiro Ando concert , the official Yamaha Electone player ... he's gonna be here for the first time and showing off yamaha's latest model! Woo hooo i get to be inspired once again before leaving for NS ! But kinda sad too i gotta give up watching the Philharmonic Orchestra's International Composer Award orchestra on the same night . What's with 27th Nov ?? Beautiful date for music? Well , somehow we have to make choices and i gotta choose a choice closest to my heart ... the Electone ....
Ooops like that also take me such a long paragraph ... Ok i'm suppose to blog about Rojak . U know what rojak is ? Not the general "rojak" thingey i meant about Malaysian culture , language and heritage . But I'm talking bout the food , the snack , the Rojak - the mixed fruits! Oops , the Chinese rojak i mean . Hahaha you see here i'm talking bout a homemade special rojak . Not only full of love , but also full of secret recipes that has lasted this family's business for more than 15 years . They've been here , in Jalan Jambu Wednesday pasar malam , every week night from 7pm-10pm earning every hard sweat penny .
It all started out like this .... Once upon a time , in a far away land ... there lived a small couple whom had no children yet . The wife of the family would set out a small stall in the wednesday nite market to sell rojak and earn some money . Soon after , she began to treat it as a permanent income and because of the high demand over her rojak recipe , customers were attracted to her tasty rojak . She began selling every week , getting a permanent license to sell , and started her business there . Years pass by and she grew more and more experienced over her rojak recipe and began improving on her food . Her rojak grew tastier and dropping standards were a word customers would hard to recall .
Time and again , people grow old and family starts growing . From a family of 2 they blossom into more than 5 and with kids around her , this hardworking woman not only have to sweat her heart out , she had to make sure food was sufficient for every single member of the family . Her husband came out to help at night at her rojak stall . He peeled the fruits , she mixed them skillfully . Soon after, years pass by like flashes of light . Her children grew older and they soon came out to help . From little teeny weeny hands and feet that helped her peel and cut the fruits , today in the year 2004 .. almost more than 10 years at the same spot every wednesday .. You'll see the same faces selling rojak , but only with younger and more refreshing looks . And I mean SAME faces! ahhahaha ...
The younger generation has taken place . Ms Mother withdrew from her custom rojak seat and took the seat of a mother many dreamed off . One who could just pass down her baton , sit and relax the comfort of her hard work paid off many years since by her children .
Being a teenager who's NOT fond of rojak , i've not been there to buy from them a couple of years back . But lately because of the high demand again by my family members , I have no choice but to stand there and wait for some time to order my packets of rojak . Boy , I'd never know buying rojak was fun ! Hahaha .... As Ms Mother has passed down her baton , she pass down not only to her daughter but also her beloved son . Some weeks I could see ms short-hair daughter selling and mixing fruits with loads of anger and frustration venting into her drops of sweat . Her perspiration and dedication and also little patience certainly paid the customer's off by having a fun time observing her behaviour . There were times I caught her mixing with a pissed off face , scolding her brother for not listening to her instructions , screwing up the orders , and also not enough supply available . Hahahha ..... boy you'd want to notice her red and hot headed face too!
Next we have Mr Prince Charming son , who'd been couple of years sitting by the side , just peeling and cutting fruits while sister mixes them . You see , mixing rojak is a very vital job and only (i suppose) the chosen ones are trusted with that honour . Hahaha .. He finally got his promotion , and started the mixing fruits job . Couple of weeks ago , I saw him at the very same place and with a huge spoon and big round bowl , he's constantly ready to groove wit the spoon! Cool calm and collected , that's how Mr Son always carry himself . Quiet and patient person but often spot on with a not so friendly face , he's trustable and often gets your orders wrong . Hahaha he'll only get it right when little people are there and his helper (i suspect it's the gf) standing by him helping him to remember things .
Coming up , we also have Ms Long Hair Daughter who's the younger one i suspect of Ms Short Hair Daughter . Hardly sees her at the stall , so nothing much to story about her . But one funny incident though , was that of yesterday night . Ger and i went to the pasar malam as usual and ordered our rojak only to find out it was surprisingly Ms Mother mixing the fruits ! We rushed to the stall immediately and got our orders done . While waiting , i couldn't help but eaves drop at their conversation between Ms Mother and Ms Long Hair Daughter . (translated from Hokkien)
"He ah , just now called him said he's on the way .. Ya i'm coming i'm coming . What's the time now? Already 8+ and he still doesn't show up! What dinner he's eating that took him so long?"
"Now you know mum , I called him at 7 30 and he said he's leaving now . It's already almost 830 and he still doesn't show up . Ai ... etc etc etc"
"You don't scold me la.."
"I'm not scolding you mum , i'm talking bout your beloved fillial son . (in a sarcastic manner) Your bad son."
Oopps ... things were heated up already . Ger paid for her rojak and left . We moved on until I had to go back second time to buy for my bro in-law who called for his order . So we moved back and just before I stepped in amongst the crowd to order , Ms Mother stepped away and Mr Prince Charming Son appeared to take over her place . Surprise surprise ... he's back! Hahhaha.. And so ... things were usual ... Ms Mother got pissed off , took some cash from the box and walked away to have her precious evening walk . Hahhaha ... then came appearing this youngest brother .. oh gosh .. the one that triggers my laughter nerves the most .
Every time I see him , i can't help staring at his cute really BIG nose .. ahahaha a unique feature , with some hair that's getting browner and browner every week . Hahhah .. oh and some pierced ears . I suspect he's around my age , and oh gosh ... you'd also laugh at his blurness ... He's only the one that ties the strings and pack the final touches for customers now, but sometimes he gets messed up with the bills . THere was once he tried so hard and took so long to explain which is which about the rojak , i kept asking him how much is in total but he just kept talking bout the rojak . Hahaha how blur can he get ? I couldn't hold any longer and just took a Rm 10 and let him change it . Whenever he appears , i'll burst into laughter ... so often whenever i see him , i'll start hiding my face behind my sis' back .Hahhaah it's hard to control u know ! Especially when you guys know how LOUD i can get !
There you have ... the authentic Rojak Family .... hard and tough business , but that's how life goes on for these people . They did grow from a small couple to a big family . One business that becomes the family's business, ranging from young to old . They'd constantly bring their "do re mi fa's" (3rd generation) , but i guess something BIG is uniting them . The ROJAK . I'll constantly enjoy their rojak though i don't fancy it (honestly , i've never bought a pack from them for myself ...) and enjoy their family happenings whenever i visit them . Like Hem said , it's nice to go pasar malam to reminise the good old days , when u see these people has been here selling the same old thing for YEARS . To the rojak family , YOU GUYS ROCK .....
